Rimas Pakalnis: Obituary

It is with great sadness that we lost Dr. Rimas Pakalnis, P.Eng, at 2:36 pm on Thursday, October 18th. He developed a severe, aggressive and virulent blood borne infection that he was unable to fight off after a short but fierce struggle. He is survived by his wife Anna, son Brodie, daughter Elena and brother Victor.

Rimas Pakalnis was born on Oct 28th, 1956, in Malartic Quebec. He attended KLCVI in Kirkland Lake Ontario, followed by McGill University for Mining Engineering and the University of British Columbia for his Masters, and Ph.D. Over his life he taught hundreds of students at UBC, and supervised dozens of Masters and Ph.D. students.

He was a great champion of empirical method for rock mechanics mine design, and put his conviction and skills into practice around the world. He worked for 169 mining companies across all continents, improving industry and keeping his fellow humans safe with his designs. He will be sorely missed around the globe.

In lieu of flowers a scholarship fund will be set up to honour his memory. There will be a celebration of life event at a later date. An announcement will be made to let you know the details.
