Mining is a strong component of the British Columbia economy. There are 7 metal mines and 9 coal mines, as well as approximately 27 industrial minerals quarries and mines, numerous placer mines and more than 1100 aggregate pits in operation.

These recover metals (principally gold, silver, copper, molybdenum, nickel, lead and zinc); industrial minerals (sand and gravel, cement, granite, zeolites), coal, oil and gas, and gem stones.

In addition, British Columbia is the largest coal-exporting province in Canada. In 2004 clean coal production in B.C. totaled 27.1 million tonnes, with a value of approximately $1.1 billion. The largest centre is Elk Valley in southeastern B.C.

Vancouver is a leading international mining centre, due to a large number of mining and exploration companies, engineering services and consulting companies, venture capital and stockmarket offices, mining equipment manufacturers and suppliers, port/rail facilities and research institutions.

UBC Mining graduate students are actively involved in conducting research to contribute towards the improvement of mining and its contribution to the Canadian economy.
