Rimas Pakalnis is a Professor in mining engineering at the University of British
Columbia. He is a graduate of McGill and the University of British Columbia where he
received his B.Eng, MASc and PhD (1986). Dr. Pakalnis is the author of over fifty
technical papers on developing geotechnical design methods for underground openings.
Research areas include applied mine design and currently focused on the design under
consolidated backfill. He has consulted/researched to over one hundred mines throughout
the world. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia and Ontario.
