Title: Treasuring the Earth: The Ethics of Mineral Extraction Date: March-29-11 Time: 5:30 PM PDT Room: 101 Chemical/Biological Engineering Duration: 1:30:00 Link: Treasuring the EarthNote: Some web browsers may prompt you to add Silverlight (like Flash). Description: Mining has been an essential part of human development and continues to be a source of economic opportunity for millions of people worldwide. However, the uses for human "needs" versus human "wants" have come under increasing scrutiny. What should be our ethical compass in evaluating mineral projects in terms of their impacts, particularly among indigenous peoples? This lecture will be based on Dr. Ali's notable book "Treasures of the Earth: Need, Greed and a Sustainable Future" which has been profiled in Forbes magazine and received cover endorsements by two Nobel laureates. Further details about the book are at: http://www.treasurebook.infoSaleem H. Ali is Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of Vermont's Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources and the Director of the Institute for Environmental Diplomacy and Security at UVM's James Jeffords Center for Policy Research. He is also on the adjunct faculty of Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies and the visiting faculty for the United Nations mandated University for Peace (Costa Rica).

Even though treaties are in place - the Douglas Treaties, Treaty 8, the Nisga'a, Tswwassen First Nation and Maa-nulth First Nations Treaties - of those only some of these treaties contemplate mineral titles. Don Ryan will discuss the developments between First Nations communities, private industry and the government, including how the Stk'emlupsemc Communities of T'kemlups and Skeetchestn have negotiated employment and contracting opportunities and revenue sharing opportunities with New Gold Inc., created an Environmental Monitoring Board to foster on-going dialogue between New Gold Inc., the T'kemlups and Skeetchestn, and the Ministry of Natural Resources; and revenue sharing through a percentage of royalties with British Columbia. Foundational to the agreements reached are respect for First Nations processes and culture. Don B.
