Imagining and building mining and metal supply scenarios by asking “what if” can lead to some interesting observations. This BBC Future Planet article describes what would happen if society tried to do without mining. It’s an unlikely scenario, but the resulting hardships are surprisingly easy to predict. They show how society is completely dependent on metals and materials, but disengaged from how they are supplied.
