The Mining Undergraduate Society (MUGS) team representing the University of British Columbia won the 2024 Canadian Mining Games held March 7-10 in Sudbury Ontario. This competition marks UBC’s first win since 2017.

The Canadian Mining Games are an annual competition providing an opportunity for mining engineering students from across Canada to showcase their mining knowledge through a combination of technical, practical and presentation-driven challenges. Industry sponsors are able to create and develop individual events and interact directly with students during competitions to evaluate their responses to new and challenging situations. Students compete in technical events like mineral identification and mine design, practical challenges like mine rescue and jackleg drilling, and presentations with themes including crisis management, and health and safety. In addition to the friendly competition, both students and industry representatives are given the chance to expand their network through banquets and the career fair.

Held at rotating locations, the MUGS team competed alongside students from 10 Canadian Universities in the event hosted by Laurentian University. They included the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Laurentian University, McGill University, Polytechnique Montréal, Queen’s University, University of British Columbia, Université Laval, University of Alberta, University of Saskatchewan, and University of Toronto.

NBK and the Mining Undergraduate Society Team would like to thank the sponsors, Nevada Gold Mines, UBC APSC, Teck, Wheaton Precious Metals, Burgundy Diamond Miners, Polycorp, Klohn Crippen Berger, Ascot Resources, AtkinsRealis, BBA, Giffen Consulting, Taseko Gibraltar, Newgold, Mineit Consulting Inc and Red Paramount Iron for their assistance and support.
