Ready to deepen your expertise in mining waste management and learn from leaders in the field? The next cohort will be starting in January 2026.

## Application Deadline

Currently Accepting applications for 2026. Please indicate preference for starting in January, May or September.

### Timeline

This program will run courses as follows:

**Year 1:** 4 months, including a 2-week synchronous session in the period.  
**Year 2:** 4 months, the next year, including a 2-week in-person session with a field trip in the period.

### Application Steps

1. **Pay the Application Fee:** Submit payment through the [e-payment forms](https://secure.touchnet.net/C20435_ustores/web/store_main.jsp?STOREID=139&SINGLESTORE=true "E-Payment Forms") by selecting *“Certificate Program Application Fee.”* Take a screenshot of the payment confirmation as this will be required in your online application.
2. **Complete the** [**Online Application Form**](https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1EKfmtNMBUIIgZv "Online Application Form")**:** Fill out and submit the Graduate Certificate online application form.
3. **Submit Reference Letters:** Request three reference letters or forms from your referees. Referees must send their letters directly to the Department of Mining Engineering.
4. **Submit Official Transcripts:** Request that your previous institutions mail official transcripts directly to us.
5. **Provide Proof of English Proficiency (if applicable):** If your undergraduate degree was from a non-English language institution, submit English language test scores that meet the program's requirements.

### Reference Letters





A minimum of **three references** are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and professional qualifications. Of the three references, at least one should be an academic reference.

There are two possible formats for references:

#### Letter of Reference

Your referee may wish to send a paper letter. Paper letters of reference should be on the referee’s official letterhead. The envelope should be sealed and endorsed by the referee.

#### Reference Form

UBC provides an academic reference form and a professional reference form.

Reference forms and or letters should be sent directly to the Department of Mining Engineering **in a sealed and endorsed envelope.**

### Official Transcripts





Official transcripts are required from all non-UBC post-secondary studies you have completed (even if a degree was not conferred). To be deemed official, transcripts must be in sealed, stamped, endorsed envelopes from the issuing university.

Send all transcripts directly to the Department of Mining Engineering.





### English Proficiency





If your undergraduate degree is from a university where the official language of instruction was not English, you must take and pass [one of the acceptable English language proficiency exams.](https://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/application-admission/english-language-test "Reference Form") Your English language proficiency exam must have been completed within two years of your application submission date.

- NBK Institute of Mining Engineering department code (69).
- Give the reason for taking TOEFL “to enter a college or university as a graduate student."
- Please refer to the Graduate Studies website for instructions on how to submit each test score.
- All English proficiency test scores should be sent directly to the Department of Mining Engineering.
