It is the responsibility of each member of the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering to familiarize themselves with all the procedures relative to a safe environment and to know where to access information and/or equipment in an emergency.
Safety Requirements requirements
Faculty, Staff and Students are required to complete safety training before beginning work in our laboratory facilities. Students from outside the department wanting to take any of our mineral processing courses will be wait-listed until they have met the undergraduate student safety training requirements. Students or researchers from other departments wanting to use our processing labs are also required to complete safety training.

Once you are enrolled there are different requirements depending on your role at UBC.

Resources
Mining Local Safety Team (LST) LST
The Mining Local Safety Team (LST) includes faculty, staff, and student representatives who meet monthly to discuss health, safety and environment issues that affect the department. The Mining LST plays a key role in providing assistance on:
- Safety items and issues within our mandate and providing information, recommendations and support to the Applied Science JOHSC (Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee)
- Worksite inspections
- Accident/incident investigations, and
- Communication of occupational safety-related information

Travel & Field Safety travel
The Norman B. Keevil (NBK) Institute of Mining Engineering is committed to supporting the safety and wellbeing of NBK members who travel as part of their work, research and/or education. The Travel & Field Safety information provided applies to university-related activities that occur off of UBC campus locations whether it be for a field trip, field research or business trip. The following information is to provide the guidance, tools and resources to University trip planners to meet regulatory requirements and to support the safety of UBC community members who are traveling and / or performing field work.
