Facilities

Our facilities are specifically designed to ensure that our faculty, staff and students are prepared to meet the demands of the mining industry.

Our instructional building, the Frank Forward building and our research facility, the Coal & Mineral Processing Laboratory, are fully equipped to provide a positive research and educational framework.

Much of the equipment has been obtained through the generosity of donors and the initiative of faculty who seek out and obtain research grants.

As a result, the UBC Department of Mining Engineering is able to maintain its reputation for producing first-rate mining engineers and research.

In 2003 we underwent a major renovation that gave us a state-of-the-art classroom, a larger conference room, and a redesigned main office that includes more workspace, quiet nooks, and a coffee room.

The NBK Mining Institute’s instructional building is the Frank Forward Building of Metallurgy. Originally built in 1968 at a cost of $3-million, its design was reported as “an abstract of hexagonal symmetry,” which is characteristic of many metals. Vancouver artist George Norris worked for nine months on the design. Metallic components, including old gears, were pressed into some parts of the brick before it was fired.

The building is named after Dr. Forward, an internationally renowned researcher and the former head of metallurgy at UBC.

Coal Mineral Processing Laboratory (CMPL)

The Coal & Mineral Processing Laboratory (CPML) at UBC was originally built in 1984.

That building was renovated and upgrade in 2011 at a cost of $5,500,000. Designed by Johnson Davidson Architecture, the exterior of the 6,500 sqft building now boasts shimmering zinc-shingled tiles that represent one of the primary minerals mined by Teck Resources, the project’s leading donor.

UBC is located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm people (Musqueam; which means 'People of the River Grass') and Syilx Okanagan Nation. The land has always been a place of learning for the Musqueam and Syilx peoples, who for millennia have passed on their culture, history and traditions from one generation to the next.
