Teaching Assistants

• Current UBC students or recent graduates (within 8 months) are eligible.
• Applicants must be registered or unconditionally accepted into a UBC program for the term of the TA appointment.
• Students from other programs may be considered based on experience and suitability.

Because Winter TA applications open before course schedules and final enrolments are confirmed, the number of hours assigned to each course can vary from year to year. Some courses—especially low‑enrolment graduate courses—may receive fewer hours or may not receive a TA at all.
At the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, TA workload is typically:

• ~64 hours per term for a full TA appointment
• ~32 hours per term for marker‑only positions

(Actual hours may vary depending on course needs and final enrolment.)

Under the CUPE 2278 Collective Agreement, the maximum allowable workload is:

• Up to 192 hours per term
• Up to 384 hours total in the Winter Session (Sept–Apr)
• Up to 192 hours during the Summer term (May–Aug)

Students may hold more than one part‑time TA position across UBC, provided their combined total hours remain within these CUPE 2278 limits.

• Must reside in British Columbia for the duration of the appointment.
• Must be legally eligible to work in Canada and provide documentation (e.g., study permit + SIN).

International students without a study permit before the term begins must decline the offer.

• Must be able to attend lectures, labs, tutorials, meetings, and on‑campus duties.

If you will be away from BC for a significant portion of the term, please do not accept a TA assignment.

• Must disclose any other TA positions or responsibilities before accepting an offer.
• Must ensure combined hours do not exceed limits set in the Collective Agreement.

• Offers must be accepted or declined within 10 business days.
• All Workday HR onboarding tasks must be completed once the appointment is initiated.
• New TAs and returning TAs who have not participated in the Faculty of Applied Science (APSC) TA training program must complete the training, as it is designed to help ensure that TAs are successful in their roles. If you receive a TA position, information on this training will be provided to you (typically within the first few weeks of the term).

Safety is a core expectation in the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering. All Teaching Assistants must complete the department’s required safety training before participating in any teaching activities, including labs, demonstrations, or fieldwork.

TA appointments are contingent on completing all required training.

Required training may include:
•    Mining Department Safety Orientation
•    Laboratory‑specific safety instructions (as applicable)
•    Any additional training identified by the course instructor or the Safety Officer
