CIM Student & Industry Panel Discussion and Networking – Fall 2025

CIM Student & Industry Panel Discussion and Networking – Fall 2025

CIM Vancouver and UBC Mining Engineering hosted a successful Student & Industry Panel Discussion and Networking Event on October 16, 2025, bringing together students, alumni, and industry professionals for an evening of insight, connection, and career exploration.

Held in the Frank Forward Building, the event featured a panel of distinguished professionals and UBC Mining alumni representing a diverse range of roles across the mining sector:

  • Charlie Clark – Senior Mining Engineer, Skeena Gold

  • James Davidson – Senior Process Consultant, Hatch

  • Cameron Edwards – Principal, Business Improvement, Brucejack Mine

  • Julday Dia – B2Gold

  • Helen Segarty – Senior Metallurgist, Teck Resources

The discussion covered a wide spectrum of topics, including career paths in mining, mentoring advice for success and happiness in the industry, emerging fields and new career opportunities, and effective networking strategies. Panelists shared their personal journeys and offered practical insights on navigating an evolving industry that continues to blend engineering innovation, sustainability, and business acumen.

Students from both undergraduate and graduate programs in Mining Engineering—as well as others interested in mining careers—had the opportunity to engage directly with the panelists in an open Q&A format. The interactive discussion fostered an engaging dialogue between students and professionals, encouraging curiosity, reflection, and confidence about future career directions.

Following the panel, participants gathered for a networking session in Room 501, where lively conversations continued over pizza and refreshments. The informal setting provided an excellent opportunity for students to connect one-on-one with industry experts, seek advice, and expand their professional networks.

The event highlighted the department’s ongoing commitment to bridging the gap between academic learning and industry practice, and to supporting students as they prepare to enter one of Canada’s most dynamic and essential industries.
