Undergraduate Awards

Goldcorp Women in Mining Engineering Award

5415-MINE: $20,000

A $20,000 award is offered annually by Goldcorp to a female student enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science program in Mining Engineering. The recipient of this award will demonstrate academic excellence, disruptive thinking, and leadership skills inspiring the next generation of global mining innovators. Goldcorp is a senior gold producer based out of Vancouver. The company has six mines and four development projects, employing over 15,000 people across the Americas. The award is made on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Mining Engineering.

James (Jim) O'Rourke Scholarship in Mining Engineering

5428-MINE: $19,050

Scholarships totalling $19,050 have been made available through an endowment established in honour of James (Jim) O’Rourke (B.A.Sc. 1964), P.Eng., OBC, and supported by friends, family and colleagues, for outstanding Bachelor of Applied Science students specializing in Mining Engineering. Preference will be given to students studying Mineral Processing. Mr. O’Rourke is the founder of Copper Mountain Mining Corp and played a vital role in many prominent global mining projects in his fifty-year career. He served as president and director of numerous public and private companies and his contributions to mining and business have been recognized with honors including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mining Association of B.C. and induction into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. Jim received the Order of British Columbia (OBC) in 2011 for his contributions to mine building in B.C. The scholarships are made on the recommendation of the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering.

James Marlow Scholarship in Mining Engineering

5373-MINE: $18,600

Scholarships totalling $18,600 have been endowed by the Estate of James Marlow for undergraduate students entering the fourth-year of mining engineering who demonstrate an interest in the design and operation of surface and/or underground mines. Recommendations are made by the Faculty of Applied Science.

Louis J. Gall Award in Mining Engineering

5335-MINE: $15,600

Service awards totaling $15,600 have been endowed by Louis J. Gall (B.A.Sc. 1944) for students with satisfactory academic standing in the Department of Mining Engineering who have demonstrated leadership skills through participation in campus and community activities. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Department.

Sandy Laird Service Award in Mining Engineering

5318-MINE: $7,000

Awards totalling $7,000 have been made available through an endowment established by Sandy Laird, (B.A.Sc. 1957) (Mining Engineer) to second- and third-year undergraduate students majoring in Mining Engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science. These awards are intended for mining engineering students who aspire to become industry leaders through careers in mine operations and management. Recipients have the opportunity to expand their understanding and knowledge of the industry to help them succeed in their professional career. Strong leadership abilities are critical to advancement in the mining industry, therefore, candidates must have demonstrated leadership through active participation in extracurricular activities in high school, the community, the university and/or sports. Students in co-op studies are eligible to receive the award. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of Mining Engineering.

Harold A. Steane Memorial Award

2247-MINE: $5,000

A $5,000 award is offered by the Harold A Steane Memorial Fund, in memory of Harold A. Steane, to a student entering either of the last two years of the mineral process undergraduate program. Preference is given to a student with demonstrated dedication to the mineral industry and the ability in working with others. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Mining Engineering.

Professor Andrew Andy Mular Memorial Award in Mining Engineering

5448-MINE: $3,850

Awards totalling $3,850 have been made available through an endowment established by friends, family and colleagues in memory of Professor Andrew Andy Mular (1930- 2020), for outstanding Bachelor of Applied Science students majoring in Mining Engineering who have demonstrated an interest in the mining industry and breadth in their interests through educational, extracurricular, or leadership activities. Professor Mular (B.Sc., M.Sc.) joined UBC as a Professor of Mineral Process Engineering in 1972 and served as Head of what was then known as the Mining and Mineral Processing Department (MMP) from 1986 to 1993. He retired as a Professor Emeritus in 1996. Professor Mular was the recipient of the Walter Gage Award from UBC in 1984 and the Robert H. Richards Award from the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration in 1990 for his work to further mineral beneficiation. He was credited for a series of publications on plant design, published by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME). He was a valued contributor to his field, known for his many presentations at a wide variety of mining-related conferences. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering.

Lt. Eric Soulis Ditmars Memorial Scholarship

2176-MINE: $3,200

A scholarship of $3200 has been endowed by the late William C. Ditmars. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Mining and Mineral Process Engineering to a student in the Department who shows promise of outstanding ability and has sound personal qualities and character.

Westmin Resources Limited - Dr. G. M. Furnival Scholarship

2198-MINE: $3,200

A scholarship of $3,200 has been endowed for students in the second or higher year of Mining and Mineral Process Engineering or Geological Engineering by Westmin Resources Limited, to honour the contributions of Dr. G. M. Furnival to the development of the mineral industry. Candidates must be proceeding to a degree in either Mining and Mineral Process Engineering with specialization in Mining Engineering, or in Geological Engineering with specialization in Mining Geology. This award is made on the basis of both scholarship and demonstrated interest in the mining industry, on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Mining and Mineral Process Engineering or Director of Geological Engineering. The award will normally alternate between the two departments.

Newmont Mining Corporation David Long Memorial Award

5345- MINE $3,000

A $3,000 award has been endowed by the Newmont Mining Corporation in memory of David Long for a third or fourth year student in Mining Engineering or Geological Engineering who has demonstrated leadership and service to the campus and community. The award is made on the recommendation of Mining Engineering in odd-numbered years and of Geological Engineering in even-numbered years.

Bernard Boe Memorial Scholarship

5307-MINE: $2,925

Scholarships totalling $5,850 have been endowed through the estate of Phyllis Elizabeth Duncan in memory of Bernard Boe for undergraduate students entering their final year of study in Geological Engineering or Mining Engineering. The awards are made on the recommendation of the eligible departments with the half total amount going to a student in Geological Engineering and half the amount to a student in Mining Engineering.

IODE, Ruskin Chapter, Alfred Newton Wolverton Memorial Scholarship

7680-MINE: $2,750

A scholarship of $2750 endowed by the Ruskin Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire through a bequest from Alfred Newton Wolverton, is offered to worthy and deserving undergraduates in Mining Engineering. Preference is given first, to students entering the third year, and second, to those proceeding from third to the final year. Scholarships are made on the basis of scholastic ability, promise in the field of mining, and financial need.

SAG Mining Engineering Scholarship

5314-MINE: $2,600

Scholarships totalling $2,600 have been endowed by SAG for Mining Engineering students entering second year. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of Mining Engineering.

ConeTec Women in Geotechnical Engineering Award

5419-MINE: $2,500

Two $2,500 awards are offered annually by the ConeTec Education Foundation and the Woeller Family Foundation for second and third-year female Bachelor of Applied Science students in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Mining Engineering who have demonstrated leadership and an interest in pursuing geotechnical field work and field research. ConeTec Investigations was founded in 1985 by Mining Engineering alumnus David Woeller (M.Eng. 1986). Headquartered in Richmond, B.C. and with offices throughout North and South America, the company provides full-service geotechnical and geoenvironmental site investigation for the infrastructure, mining, energy, environmental and construction industries. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Applied Science.

Cy and Emerald Keyes Bursary in Mining Engineering

7957-MINE: $2,500

Bursaries to a total of $2,500 have been made available by the late Cy and Emerald Keyes for students in Mining Engineering. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of Mining Engineering. The bursaries are available only to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

Fluor Canada Ltd Scholarship in Chemical, Materials and Mining Engineering

2195-MINE: $1,750

A scholarship of $1,750 is offered annually by Fluor Canada Ltd., to a 3rd or 4th year student in one of the following disciplines: Chemical, Materials or Mining Engineering, who has actively participated in a multi-disciplinary student design team. Preference will be given to a 4th year student with an interest in pursuing a career in the mining and metals sector, and/or the Engineering, Procurement and Construction industry. The scholarship is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Applied Science.

Lornex Mining Corporation - Dr. E. B. Gillanders Memorial Scholarship

2199-MINE: $1,050

A scholarship of $1,050 has been endowed by Lornex Mining Corporation Ltd. in memory of Dr. Earl B. Gillanders, B.A. (Geology) 1925, M.A. (1926), Ph.D. Princeton (1930) and his many contributions to the mining industry. The award is made to a student proceeding to a B.A.Sc. degree or higher degree in Mining and Mineral Process Engineering. The student must be planning to work in the mining industry following graduation. This award is made on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Mining and Mineral Process Engineering.

John Meech Memorial Award

5404-MINE: $1,000

A $1,000 award is offered annually in memory of John Meech to a mining engineering student who shows outstanding leadership skills. The award is named in memory of Professor John Meech, a faculty member in the Department of Mining Engineering for 26 years and whose dedication to the Faculty will never be forgotten. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Mining Engineering, and in the case of graduate students, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Robert Quarrington Maxwell Scholarship

2299-APSC: $900

Scholarships totalling $900 have been endowed through a bequest from Robert Quarrington Maxwell for students entering the third year of a Bachelor of Applied Science program in engineering. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Applied Science.

Dunsmuir Scholarship

2120-MINE: $650

A scholarship of $650 founded by the Hon. James Dunsmuir, is awarded to the undergraduate student entering third year in the Faculty of Applied Science with the highest standing in Mining and Mineral Process Engineering.

Samuel Stewart Fowler Memorial Prize in Engineering

2288-MINE: $350

A $350 prize has been endowed through a bequest by Frances Tomlinson in memory of her father Samuel Stewart Fowler. The award is offered to a student in the Department of Mining and Mineral Process Engineering and is made on the recommendation of the Head of the Department.

Eldridge Memorial Prize

2191-MINE: $200

A prize of $200 has been endowed by the late Mrs. H. E. B. Eldridge. The award is made to the graduating student with the highest standing in Mining and Mineral Process Engineering.

 

 

Graduate Awards

The Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering regularly offers Research Paper Awards ($450-$1,800 range) to graduate students (MASc and PhD) in our program who actively publish their research in peer-reviewed journal articles. We also offer awards ($250-$500 range) to graduate students who win competitive prizes at international conferences (for example, the IMPC Young Author Award).

 

The Institute also offers a limited number of one-time competitive awards ($2,000-$3,000 range) to graduate students (MASc and PhD) admitted into our graduate program who are in the first or second years of their studies at UBC. Additional eligibility criteria may apply. These awards are not available every year, and are normally awarded in September.

 

Cy and Emerald Keyes Bursary in Mining Engineering

446-MINE: $9,500

Fellowships totalling $9,500 have been made available by the late Cy and Emerald Keyes to support graduate students in Mining Engineering. The awards are made to Canadian citizens and permanent residents on the recommendation the Department of Mining Engineering, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Motion Metrics Mining Graduate Scholarship

6571-MINE: $5,000

A $5,000 scholarship is offered annually by Motion Metrics International to a Masters or PhD student who is entering their second year of study. The graduate student must be supervised by a faculty member of the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia. Preference is given to students who have demonstrated excellence in multidisciplinary, application-oriented research in mining and mineral processing and who wish to advance the area through continued study. Motion Metrics is a UBC spinoff whose advanced monitoring systems make the lives of people in mining easier, safer, and more connected. The award is made on the recommendation of the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Samit and Reshma Sharma Graduate Scholarship in Mining Engineering

100036 -Mine: $3,500

Scholarships totalling $3,500 have been made available through an endowment established by the Samit and Reshma Sharma Foundation for outstanding Master of Applied Science students at the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering. Preference will be given to students with specific interest and expertise in the environmental impacts of mining and/or corporate social responsibility.
Samit and Reshma have set up this endowment to recognize the historical and economic importance of the mining industry in BC, and to promote opportunities through research and practice to mitigate the environmental impact of this industry. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Applied Science, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Dr. Rimas Pakalnis Memorial Research Prize in Rock Mechanics

5427-Mine: $3,250

Prizes have been made available through an endowment established in memory of Dr. Rimas Pakalnis (October 28, 1956-October 18, 2018) for graduate students studying Mining Engineering whose research performance or publication record are expected to have a significant impact on the field of rock mechanics. Dr. Rimas Pakalnis (B.Eng., M.A.Sc. 1982, Ph.D. 1986) was a Professor Emeritus in the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering. A highly respected proponent of Empirical Mine Design, Dr. Pakalnis was instrumental in the development of design methodologies for rock mechanics in underground mining operations. The prizes are made on the recommendation of the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering.

Kitsault Community Scholarship

372-MINE: $2,200

A $2,450 scholarship has been endowed for a graduate student in mining and mineral process engineering who is engaged in active research in pollution control as applied to the mining industry. The award, from the Kitsault Community Club, Kitsault, B.C. is made on the recommendation of the departments concerned.

William Alexander MacKenzie Scholarship

436-MINE: $1,550

A $1,550 scholarship has been endowed in the name of William Alexander MacKenzie. This award is made to a graduate student working on a research project aimed at preventing pollution by mineral recovery operations. The award is made to a deserving student in the Department of Mining Engineering based on the recommendation of the Department Head.

Frederick Armand McDiarmid Scholarship

332-MINE: $1,500

A $1,500 scholarship, a memorial to Frederick Armand McDiarmid, is awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student with preference to those in Mining. Selection is based on academic standing, practical ability and experience, and promise in research.

John Meech Memorial Award

5404-MINE: $1,000

A $1,000 award is offered annually to a graduate or undergraduate mining engineering student who shows outstanding leadership skills. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Mining Engineering, and in the case of graduate students, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
