Laser diffraction measures light scattered by dispersed particles to estimate particle size distributions.

Actual Malvern Mastersizer 2000 instrument at the laboratory.
About the technique
Laser diffraction is widely used for characterization of mineral powders and other particulate materials. Results are commonly expressed as volume-based distributions, including D10, D50 and D90 values.
Sample dispersion and the chosen analytical settings can influence results. Confirm compatibility with the laboratory before sending samples.

Schematic illustration of the laser diffraction principle. Light scattered by dispersed particles is measured at different angles and analyzed using optical models to determine particle size distribution.
